If you are a baseball fan, then you appreciate the fun and the competition. Other people, however, have never experienced a game and have no idea what they are missing out on. The article found here will be of interest, no matter what level your play.

Practice your defense. Sure pitching and batting get all of the glory, but being a great defensive player is worth just as much to your team. The ability to save a run is just as valuable as the ability to create a run. Both are needed to win ball games.

Catcher’s equipment helps to keep the catcher safe. A catcher’s uniform will include shin guards, a hat with a facemask and a chest protector. In addition to these items, most catchers wear a cup to protect the groin. Finally, a catcher’s mitt is used to help stop the ball quickly.

For kids in baseball, make sure they their hands are placed properly for hitting. The top hand on the bat needs to be sitting near the same height as their rear shoulder, about 3 to 6 inches from that rear shoulder. Their rear elbow needs to be around 45-degrees. The front elbow needs to be lower and about even with the back elbow.

Keep your head up, your eyes level and focus on the ball when batting. You should be looking over your front arm. If you shift your eyes or move your head, your rear shoulder will shift in reaction. Remaining focused on the ball and keeping your head immobile will give you better timing and more consistency.

Don’t showboat. Some sports condone showboating, like a touchdown dance in football. But in baseball, showboating after a home run or a big strikeout is very much frowned upon. It’s the type of thing that causes a lot of bad blood between teams, and it can easy cause rifts among teammates.

If you are in the outfield, learn to read the ball. With practice, you can know approximately where the ball will land each time the ball is hit. Carefully, watch the pitcher so you know the speed of the ball when it crosses the plate. By simply knowing the speed you can judge how far the ball will be hit.

As an outfielder you need to focus on who the batter is. A batter who stands on the right side of the plate will generally hit the ball toward left field. Lefties do the opposite. This knowledge can better prepare you for what might occur in a game.

To help you stay focused on the ball when running towards it, run on your tiptoes. If you run and allow your heel to hit the ground, you will jar your body. This jarring will make your eyes lose focus on the ball. To keep this from happening run on your tiptoes.

When swinging a bat in baseball, make sure that you follow-through with your swing. Your bat’s momentum, whether or not there is contact, helps you follow through. Without following through, there won’t be much power since the swing may slow down prior to making contact. This is why the follow-through is essential.

You must break in a baseball glove. If you are lucky and have a new glove for your season, you should take a few weeks beforehand to work that glove a lot. Toss the ball in the new glove. Apply a leather softener frequently to help the it loosen up. Using your fist, punch the weave. Gloves that are broken in work better.

If the sun blinds you as the ball comes strait toward you, shield your eyes with your glove. Lifting that glove over your eyes helps block the extreme sun brightness and helps you continue to watch the ball.

Never reach across your body to try to catch a grounder. Use your quick feet to shuffle your body so your glove can grab the ball out in front. Otherwise, when catching the ball, the baseball might only hit the edge of your glove.

If you have a kid in a youth baseball team, make sure that they have proper leg strength if they pitch a lot. The strength in their legs is very important to their performance. They can generate more velocity and maintain better stamina by having better leg strength. Strong legs do not have to be muscular or large.

Always remember when out in the outfield to make sure you call the ball if you plan to make the catch. As well, you must also listen for other fielders to be sure that you’re not trying to take a catch they have called. Also, if you happen to be the center fielder, you’re call overrules another simultaneous call.

To frustrate a pitcher, think about laying down a bunt when he least expects it. This tests his fielding acumen while giving you a chance to eke out a base hit. Having to chase down your bunt can break his rhythm, so if he is mowing down your teammates, use a bunt to change things up.

To prepare yourself for coming in off the bench as a pinch hitter, make sure that you pay attention to the progress of the game. Even if you are not a starter, you can track pitches and follow the trends of the game. When it is time for you to go in, you will know what the pitcher is likely to do.

As you can tell, you don’t need to be a professional player to enjoy baseball. All it takes is learning everything you can about the sport. Remember this advice the next time you see a game on television.
